Lets Talk About: iOS So Close To Android As iPhone 7’s Lack of Headphone Not An Issue

Even without been told you will agree with me that Apple’s new iPhone 7 has generated a substantial growth for iOS in the largest mobile markets across the world, and Kantar data for the three months ending October 2016 reveals that the removal of the headphone jack “has proved to be a non-issue.”

Kantar says that Japan has now become a market dominated by Apple’s iOS with a sales share of 51.7 percent, followed by the UK and the United States, where iPhones accounted for 44 percent and 40.5 percent of the sales, respectively.

As far as the United States is concerned, iOS improved by 7 percent, but Android continues to be the leader with 57.9 percent of the smartphone sales. This is the 5th consecutive year-on-year decline, though, Kantar reveals, so iOS is getting substantially closer.

Google Pixel also selling well
This new batch of statistics only includes the first weeks of iPhone 7 availability, so there’s a big chance for iOS to continue its growth, so next-month figures are likely to bring the platform even closer to Android.

“The lack of the headphone jack has proved to be a non-issue for US iPhone consumers, as iPhone 7 was the top selling device in the three months ending October 2016, achieving 10.6% of smartphone sales, despite not being available for the full three month period. iPhone 7 Plus was the 4th best-selling device at 5.3%, behind the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7,” said Lauren Guenveur, Consumer Insight Director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

What’s also important to note is that Google’s Pixel is also selling well, and Kantar says that Google accounted for 0.5 percent of the smartphone sales in October, which is quite a lot for a new model that only debuted on October 20.

Android continues to be the preferred mobile operating system for 75 percent of new smartphone buyers across the world, and Kantar explains that iOS is very unlikely to ever reach this performance. But on the other hand, although Android is dominating the mobile ecosystem in such a clear way, “Apple remains the most desirable smartphone brand in the world.”
